The Fireflies

A few years ago, I attended a presentation by a local LLSC volunteer. She spoke so passionately about the organization and about Light the Night. After I heard her talk I knew I had to be a part of it. A group of my friends organized activities to create awareness about blood cancer within our school community-we did presentations, gave out pamphlets, and fundraised. Now we’re in university and still supporting Light the Night. It’s an important cause for all of us because we know the money we raise is helping people in a significant way.

It’s actually hard to describe in words the feeling I get when I hear the stories from the blood cancer community at Light the Night. It takes my breath away. At last year’s walk, the Honoured Hero was my age. I kept thinking, “This could easily be me”. My worst day can’t compare to what she’s experienced as a cancer survivor, yet despite all she’s been through, she was smiling the whole time. Light the Night has been a real eye opener for me. Honestly, I think LLSC has done more for me than I’ve done with my fundraising efforts.

Most everyone has been touched by cancer in some way. Canada is an amazing place to live and it’s our duty as Canadians to support each other. We need to talk about the sad as well as the happy, and rally around those who are fighting and those who are grieving. Living through a pandemic is taking us all to darker times. Let’s stick together and let the blood cancer community know that we’re here for them.
