My journey began like so many before me. Bruising, bleeding, fatigue, dizziness and loss of appetite was a recipe for denial. So when my family doctor called on Jan 3, 2023 to say it was likely leukemia and to get to emergency, I was shocked. Hours later, when the nervous intern confirmed leukemia, I was devastated. Then he said the hematologist told him to tell me, that even though my blood was over 90% cancer cells, it was very treatable. That hematologist gave me something in that brief message...steadfast hope.
A whirlwind of tests and genetic profiling rendered an adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) diagnosis and a Dana Farber treatment protocol with a stem cell transplant forthcoming. My southern shore friends launched a fundraising campaign to cover the cost of travel to Ottawa. Based on new research, science and risk profiles, ottawa canceled the transplant. I was the first in Newfoundland with that genetic profile not to have the transplant...I was a guinea pig but with hope.
So started the induction, intensification and maintenance phases of the Dana Farber. It was a bit rocky with an ICU covid intubation, blood clot, colon tears and traveling arthritis. Two years of chemotherapy is no joke! But I held onto hope and my unwavering smile.
My wife, sister and Tunis friends enveloped me with love and support. I was not alone. And so I was included in shed parties, dinners and outings even though I could hardly stay awake. They filled me with more hope.
I was introduced to the leukemia and lymphoma society early on. The focus on science, research and peer support resonated with me. My first Light the Night experience was very powerful and moving for me. I was almost brought to tears during the remembrance speech and uplifted by the survivorship story. I was humbled to be asked to be the 2025 honored hero - NL. I aim to inspire steadfast hope to those with blood cancers.
My survivorship, rooted in science and research, would not have been possible without my top notch medical team, my wife, sister and friends. Don't give up hope!
